The ECHL exhibition season doesn't last long for the Charlotte Checkers.

It will begin today, and end today. One game.

The Checkers will host the Mississippi Seawolves at 7 p.m. at Extreme Ice Center, their Indian Trail practice facility. Tickets are $10.

Charlotte players opened camp Monday, but many had been in camps with teams in higher leagues.

“We've got to see some of these kids play,” coach Derek Wilkinson said.

“We've got 12 forwards, and ideally we'd like to carry them all. But maybe we can't, so there's a spot or two guys are battling for. On the blue line (defensemen), it's pretty wide open for playing time. What do they bring to the table, and what are our team needs?”

A fan festival at 5 p.m. will precede the exhibition.

The Checkers will open the season next Friday in Florida, the first of six road games. The home opener is Oct. 31 against the Augusta Lynx, at Time Warner Cable Arena.
