In about two weeks, the central third of Union County, including Monroe, will have access to high-speed broadband Internet service.
Verizon is changing its equipment to offer high-speed, broad band for customers within 18,000-feet (about 3.4 miles) of the company’s switching gears throughout the county. That means virtually all of Verizon’s’ customers will be within range. Verizon made the announcement at Monday’s county commissioners meeting. Verizon’s Union County customers had been offered only slower dial up service.
County Commission chair Allan Baucom said “A partnership of Union County, the City of Monroe, the Union Co. Chamber of Commerce and our economic developers has worked diligently for years to make this dream a reality. During the last five years, we have interviewed numerous providers but none could generate cost effective proposals. Businesses in the Verizon service area can now overcome the tremendous disadvantages they have suffered.”
