A family of four escaped safely from an apartment fire overnight in southeast Charlotte.
The fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. at the Berkshire on Providence apartments, on Providence Square Lane off Providence Road.
Charlotte fire Capt. Rob Brisley said firefighters found heavy smoke conditions when they arrived at the scene. He said crews brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes and contained the fire to one unit at the two-story building.
The family of four was outside when firefighters arrived, but the family's pet cat died in the blaze.
Brisley said the American Red Cross is helping care for the family. There is no word yet as to a cause or an estimate of the damage.
