Police crackdown on motorists

The N.C. Highway Patrol has launched a two-week crackdown on aggressive driving around commercial tractor-trailers on the state's interstate highways.

Operation TACT (Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks) began Monday and is scheduled to continue through Feb. 15, with troopers focusing on aggressive motorists in three corridors -- two in the Charlotte metro region:

-- Interstate 77 in Iredell County, between Amity Hill Road and U.S. 21.

-- Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County near Kannapolis, between Kannapolis Parkway and Lane Street.

-- I-85 in Durham County, between Cole Mill Road and Red Mill Road.

The Highway Patrol is teaming with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in the crackdown, designed to cut the number of wrecks involving commercial truckers and private motorists. Troopers will be watching for aggressive and other unsafe driving habits involving both groups.

State and federal officials are holding a news conference this morning at Lowes Motor Speedway to announce details of the crackdown.
