Gang Awareness Walk slated for Saturday

By David Perlmutt

A local sorority is holding a gang awareness walk Saturday through a Charlotte neighborhood menaced in recent years by gang activity.

Delta Sigma Theta is partnering with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police to hold the walk -- along with a program -- after recent reports show continuing gang violence in the city.

Walk organizers are trying to target middle and high school students, and those committed to ending gang violence.

"We are committed to this community and making it safe for all citizens," said Antoinette Cody, president of the sorority's Charlotte alumnae chapter. "More than that, we are committed to the children. We want them to know that violence is not an option and there are people and programs in the community to help them become productive citizens."

The walk begins at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 500 Bilmark Ave. It will feature a presentation by CMPD's Gang of One, a program by the department's Gang Intelligence Unit. The walk follows and will course through the Hidden Valley neighborhood, troubled in recent years by gangs.
