S.C. secession history event Saturday

The beginnings of the secession movement in South Carolina will be the subject of a historic re-enactment program scheduled Saturday at Historic Brattonsville in York County.

"Seeds of Secession" is set from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the historic site, 1444 Brattonsville Road, in McConnells, S.C. The program will focus on life in South Carolina when the state government adopted the Ordinance of Nullification, which declared tariffs passed by the federal government in 1828 and 8132 as null and void. South Carolina almost seceded from the union, before a compromise agreement was reached.

Saturday's program will include a militia muster, firearms demonstrations, and stories of the slaves of the time.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 4-17. Children 3 and younger are admitted free, as are members of the Culture & Heritage Museums of York County.
