A Mecklenburg County DSS official who helped run a Christmas charity that is the subject of an investigation into missing money has stepped down, the county said Thursday.
Cindy Brady resigned Aug. 1 as a supervisor in the Department of Social Services, county spokesman Danny Diehl said.
Brady collected donations for the agency's Giving Tree program, which has come under scrutiny for widespread accounting lapses, including purchase receipts that were altered or whited out.
In June, county officials said they cannot fully account for $162,000 in donations meant to go toward holiday gifts for needy children. The amount includes a $10,000 check made out to a county employee. The issue has led to a police investigation and reforms that have put DSS finance operations directly under county control.
Diehl would not comment on the reason for Brady's resignation. Brady did not return calls seeking comment.
County administrators revealed in March they had suspended two employees with pay connected to the Giving Tree program. They would not say whether Brady was one of the two suspended workers. She has not answered her office phone on numerous occasions or returned calls from the Observer since March.
In June, DSS Director Mary Wilson said one of the suspended workers has been cleared of wrongdoing and reinstated. The other worker had been placed medical leave, Wilson said.
Brady made an annual salary of $83,794.
