CMS offers substance abuse class

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and other local organizations will begin two more series of classes in April, designed to help parents whose children might be at-risk for substance abuse problems.

Family Nights, a program developed by the CMS High Risk Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program, is offering a series of four classes. The series began in February at Myers Park High School and continued in March at North Mecklenburg High.

April's programs will be at Phillip O. Berry Academy (in English) and at Garinger High School (in Spanish). Times of the sessions vary from week to week. That information will be provided to parents when they register.

Each session will include dinner and gift-card incentives for participating families -- along with child care and/or tutoring services for families' younger children.

During the sessions, parents and their teen-age children will be able to participate in activities related to positive behavioers, critical and creative thinking skills, goal-setting, and the importance of developing strong family lives.

"The goal of Family Nights is to help create understanding between parents and their children, while emphasizing positive discipline and improved communication," said Danielle Doskocil, coordinator of the program.

Advance registration is required, and sessions typically are closed about a week in advance. To register, contact Doskocil at 980-343-2610.

The schedule:

April (English) -- Phillip O. Berry Academy, April 1, 15, 22 and 29.

April (Spanish) -- Garinger High School, April 16, 23, 30 and May 7.

May -- East Mecklenburg High School, May 6, 13, 20 and 27.
