A team of students and staff members from UNC Charlotte will be in Tennessee this weekend, competing in the Global Venture Challenge.

Their opposition will be teams from 14 other universities around the world, and they're competing for $40,000 in cash prizes -- including $25,000 to the first-place finisher.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Industrial Technologies program, and it is designed to spur new ideas.

The Global Venture Challenge takes place at the Oak Ridge National Labs, and UNCC's team is called SolarMax Engineering. It is headed by Mohamed-Ali Hasan, associate professor in the Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications.

UNCC's team has developed a photovoltaic technology that members say has the opportunity to revolutioneze the solar-based energy sector by lowering costs while boosting energy output of solar cells.

Members of team include graduate students Tanya Dias, Terence Goveas and David Schroder; and faculty members Michael Fiddy, Hasan, and Kenneth Paulus.
