The North Carolina Highway Patrol and local police departments have launched a crackdown on speeders, scheduled to continue through the Easter holiday weekend.
Operation Slow Down began Monday, and troopers plan to aggressively enforce speed limits on the state's highways through April 12.
"North Carolina law enforcement will be going after speeders who recklessly endanger our citizens," Gov. Bev Perdue said. "Speed is the leading cause of crashes on our highways. I urge motorists to slow down and obey the speed limit."
State officials say more than 1,400 people were killed in crashes last year in North Carolina, with speeding as the leading cause.
Motorists who want to report dangerous driving to the Highway Patrol can call *HP on their cell phones.
