U.S. 74 bypass meetings continue tonight

By Steve Lyttle

The third of four consecutive nights of open houses and public hearings on the proposed Monroe Connector/Bypass will take place tonight in Monroe.

Earlier programs this week have been in Monroe and Matthews.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is trying to get public opinion on the proposed roadway that would run about 20 miles from Matthews, near the Mecklenburg-Union county line, east to Wingate or Marshville. The roadway would largely parallel U.S. 74 but would bypass Monroe and the heavily developed towns in western Union County.

The bypass is proposed as a controlled-access toll road, and the DOT has developed several possible corridors for the roadway.

A draft of plans is available at www.ncturnpike.org/projects/monroe. Hard copies are available from the planning departments in Charlotte, Stallings, Indian Trail and Monroe.

The schedule of meetings and hearings:

Tonight

Open house … 1-8 p.m., N.C. Cooperative Extension Service office, 3230-D Presson Road, Monroe.

Thursday

Open house … 2:30-6:30 p.m., Cuddy Arena, Wingate University, 230 North Camden St., Wingate.

Public hearing … 7 p.m., Austin Auditorium, Wingate University, 230 Cedar St., Wingate.
