Teen charged after 3-county chase

A Lincoln County teen has been charged in connection with an overnight chase that kept police busy in three counties.

John Robert Miller, 17, of Iron Station, was charged by police in the Gaston County town of Stanley with felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding, and driving with a revoked license. He is in Gaston County Jail, being held under a $25,000 bond.

About 3 a.m., a police officer in Stanley spotted a Ford F250 truck that matched the description of a vehicle that might have been involved in a break-in at a farm equipment store in nearby Lowell. The officer tried to stop the truck, but the driver raced off. That started a pursuit that went up and down N.C. 16 in Gaston, Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties.

At one point, police say, the driver of the truck turned around in Mecklenburg County and began heading north again on N.C. 16. Police say the suspect reached speeds of 80 mph.

Police used stop sticks to blow out the tires on the truck. Miller and another person were arrested, but Stanley police say the other person was released.

Gaston County police are investigating whether the truck was the vehicle involved in the store break-in.
