Duke Energy will acquire its first wind energy in the eastern United States, a 70-megawatt project under construction in Pennsylvania, it said today.

Duke will buy the North Allegheny Windpower Project from Gamesa Energy USA, a wind turbine and project developer. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter.

The acquisition includes a 23.5-year agreement to sell the wind farm's output and renewable energy credits to FirstEnergy. Terms weren't disclosed.

The 35-turbine project, 95 miles east of Pittsburgh, is expected to start operating later this year.

Duke Energy Generation Services, a unit that owns and develops renewable-energy projects, has more than 500 megawatts of wind power operating in western states. Another 5,000 megawatts is in development.
