Deadline tonight for CMS athlete checkup

By Steve Lyttle

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student-athletes have until midnight tonight to register for the free Heart of a Champion Day health screening program Saturday.

CMS is teaming with Carolinas Medical Center, Levine Children's Hospital, Sanger Clinic and OrthoCarolina to provide free screenings to 2,000 rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students will receive a free general sports screening, musculoskeletal check, and vision exam.

The screenings also include an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram, to check for heart conditions that could cause sudden death during practices or athletic events. Neither of these heart tests is part of a routine athletic screening.

Heart of a Champion Day will take place Saturday at the Carolinas College of Health Sciences, on the Carolinas Medical Center campus in Charlotte.

More than 450 doctors, nurses, clinicians and others have volunteered their services.

Students must ride CMS buses from their schools to the event. Boys and girls will be separated for the screenings, which will take about 15 minutes per student. Doctors will review the results and help provide appropriate follow-up, if needed.

Registration is available online at www.heartofachampionday.org.
