A Gaston County teen was rescued Sunday evening after falling from a dam into a rocky area of the South Fork River near High Shoals.
Gaston County Emergency Medical Services officials say a 17-year-old fell about 7:30 p.m. from the Hardin Dam and suffered a head injury. EMS said the injured youth's brother tried to help him but hurt his back. Another youth nearby contacted authorities.
It took rescue workers about two hours to reach the youth, whose name has not been released, due to the rocky terrain and steep embankment along the river. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was admitted for observation. His brother declined treatment.
