Mooresville names new police chief

Mooresville police Maj. Carl Robbins is the town's new police chief, Town Manager Steve Husemann announced at a town board meeting Monday night.

Robbins is a Cornelius native and 15-year veteran of the Mooresville Police Department. He had been the town's interim chief since July 2008, when Police Chief John Crone was fired amid a probe into questionable spending in the department's Cops for Kids program.

Robbins has improved the police department property room and begun seeking national accreditation for the force of 62 officers and 20 civilian workers, Husemann said. Under Robbins' leadership, the department also began a Citizens Police Academy to build understanding and trust in the community.

“He did not come into the interim position under the best of circumstances, but his integrity and strong leadership earn him respect throughout the department and the community,” Husemann said.

Robbins previously worked for the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's office and the Cornelius Police Department.

Mooresville will host a “Meet the Chief” reception 5-6 p.m. June 15 at the Town Hall, 413 N. Main St.
