Blood samples sought for massive study

Kannapolis and Cabarrus County volunteers are being asked to enroll in the so-called MURDOCK study next week at two Kannapolis City Schools.

The study, run by Duke University, is named for billionaire Dole Food owner David Murdock, who founded the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis and donated $35 million for this project.

Enrollment will be available June 11 at A.L. Brown High School and June 12 at Kannapolis Middle School, from 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. each day.

The principals and staff from both schools are expected to enroll, as well as Kannapolis Schools Superintendent Dr. Joanne Byerly.

About 50,000 volunteers from Kannapolis and Cabarrus County are being sought to provide blood samples. They will be used by researchers at Duke, other N.C. colleges and scientists around the world to study diseases, such as osteoarthritis, hepatitis C and heart disease, at the molecular level.

Researchers have said the large-scale study will make it possible to personalize medicine by understanding more about the causes of diseases, why people respond differently to treatments and how to make treatments more effective for individual patients.

Enrollment will be offered at other job sites in coming months to make it convenient for people to participate.
