Union County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis is the 2009-2010 N.C. Southwest Regional Superintendent of the Year.
Davis was chosen Tuesday during the end-of-the-year Regional Superintendent's meeting in Charlotte after being nominated by the current state superintendent of the year, Dr. Terry Holliday, superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools.
“Ed Davis has done outstanding work in leading the Union County Public Schools,” Holliday said. “During a time of unprecedented growth, Dr. Davis has led Union County through bond approvals and massive building programs.”
Davis said the recognition is a testament to his staff.
“I have a tremendous leadership team in the cabinet staff, our school principals, the central services staff and our Board of Education,” he said. “They all make it possible to get things accomplished for the school system. This is just affirmation of a solid job done by all those folks. This kind of recognition is really more about everybody else, the overall school system and what we are able to accomplish.”
He was chosen in a unanimous vote by the North Carolina Southwest Regional Superintendents.
Davis also acknowledged several other UCPS staff who have recently been recognized on a state and national level: Jessica Garner, the N.C. Teacher of the Year; UCPS Chief Communications Officer Luan Ingram who was chosen as the state's top school public relations professional; and Susan Helms, a teacher at Piedmont High School, who was selected on a national level as the Special Needs Art Educator of the Year.
“We've got a lot of people in this school system who have been singled out for different awards,” Davis said. “When you associate with a winning team, that's a positive team, it's contagious. Success breeds success.”
Davis is in his fourth year as superintendent. He started with the school system in 1977 as a special education teacher. During his 32 years with the school system, he has been an assistant principal, an elementary and high school principal, an assistant superintendent and was then named superintendent in 2005.
He also serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina School Superintendents Association and is on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association President's Advisory Committee.
Davis now advances to the state level where he will join seven other regional nominees who are also eligible for the state title.
