Starting July 8, the City of Charlotte will offer free prescription drug discount cards to Mecklenburg County residents through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities.
Cards that offer an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs will be distributed at a kick-off press conference at 1 p.m. in the chamber at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. Anyone can get a card; there is no restriction based on age, income or existing insurance coverage. The program is administered by CVS Caremark, but the cards can be used at more than 100 local participating retail pharmacies.
“In the current economic climate, where many people are watching what they spend, the NLC prescription discount card will offer significant savings on the purchase of prescription medications for our residents,” said James Mitchell, Charlotte city council member and second vice chair of National League of Cities.
“Whether or not an individual has prescription coverage, this program can make it easier for our residents to afford the drugs they need to deal with a short-term illness or stay healthy by managing a chronic condition.” The city is partnering with county government agencies, Community Health Services and Central Piedmont Community College to distribute 35,000 cards. Other groups interested in distributing cards should call 704-336-2396.
