Kannapolis folks chip in to help 3 kids

Members of the small volunteer group devoted to helping children in Kannapolis saw The Summer Camp Fund as another way to give.

So the 10-member group contributed $84 to the fund to help send three children for a week to Camp Spencer in Concord.

“We don't do things to try to be seen,” said Ronald Wright of the volunteer group Christians Helping Other People Services, or CHOPS. “Our main purpose is to help any young child further their education, and keep kids out of trouble.”

The Summer Camp Fund, an initiative by The Charlotte Observer and the nonprofit Partners in Out-of-School Time, helps children from low-income families throughout the Charlotte region attend outdoor camps.

Wright, 48 and an elder at Blessed Assurance Church in Kannapolis, started CHOPS nine years ago with his wife, Lanetta. Some members belong to Blessed Assurance, while others belong to other churches, Wright said. Members distribute summer lunches at an apartment complex in Kannapolis, and recently gave a books scholarship to a college-bound high school graduate from the area, Wright said.

A recent fundraising program at the church raised money for the lunch program, scholarship, and Summer Camp Fund donation, Wright said.

“At least those three kids for that week … will have something to do,” Wright said.
