Donald Trump wants property in Charlotte

Donald Trump said Sunday he's interested in buying a project in the Queen City.

His organization had planned to build a project at Stonewall and Tryon streets but let the contract to buy that 2.5 acres lapse in late 2007. The development could have included an office tower, condo tower, five-star hotel and upscale retail.

Trump was in Charlotte to speak to nearly 25,000 people who were expected to attend an international training event held by ACN, a telecommunications direct-sales company based in Concord.

During his quick visit to the Queen City, Trump told WCNC the deal collapsed because he had a gut feeling the banks might fall on hard times in the next couple of years. That would make the tower's price too high to be a good investment. But he still likes the area and says with all the construction uptown, there are some great deals for him to buy instead of build.

Trump says he will be looking at that prospect in the next few months. “You could always build, and you could build for less than you can buy. Today you buy for a lot less than you can build, and that's all over the country, not just Charlotte,” he said.

He wouldn't say what building he's interested in, but it would be similar to what he had planned in 2007.
