A homemade bomb was discovered Monday afternoon on heavily traveled U.S. 74 near Kings Mountain.
The N.C. Highway Patrol confirmed that a 6-inch-long device was discovered on the highway near Long Branch Road. The device was covered in silver duct tape and was spotted around noon. There is no word who spotted the device.
Troopers called in the Gaston County Bomb Squad, which detonated the device about 1 p.m.
Traffic was blocked in both directions on U.S. 74 for more than an hour while crews investigated and then detonated the device. All lanes of the highway were reopened by mid-afternoon Monday.
