S.C. Sen. Wes Hayes today became the latest GOP lawmaker to call for the resignation of embattled Gov. Mark Sanford.
Hayes said he made his decision after Sanford's admission Tuesday of additional liaisons with his Argentine mistress and occasions where he “crossed lines” with other women.
“I've reached the conclusion that he's has lost the trust and confidence of the people he serves,” said Hayes, a Rock Hill Republican. “When that happens, I think any elected official should step down.”
Tuesday night six of 27 members of the state's Senate Republican Caucus issued a letter calling on Sanford to resign.
York County GOP chairman Glenn McCall and Republican Rep. Gary Simrill, both of Rock Hill, also have called for his resignation.
