Lee Myers announced Tuesday morning that he will not seek a 10th term as mayor of Matthews.
Myers, the longest currently serving mayor in Mecklenburg County, said he wants more time to spend on his career and his hobbies.
“I've been the mayor for 18 years and was on town council for four years before that,” said Myers, an attorney. “That's a long time.”
He was elected to the Matthews Town Council in 1987, serving two terms before running successfully for mayor in 1991. During his time as mayor, Matthews has grown into one of Charlotte's biggest suburbs, and Myers emerged as a key force in a number of regional issues, notably transportation. He also was a key force in preserving and restoring a number of historic buildings in the Matthews downtown district.
Myers' departure means two of Mecklenburg County's most veteran mayors will leave office later this year. Pat McCrory, in his seventh term as Charlotte's mayor, also is not seeking re-election. Pineville's George Fowler will become the most veteran mayor, assuming he wins re-election to an eighth term in November. Fowler has not said if he is running again.
Filing for candidates opens Monday morning.
