50+ tickets at police checkpoint

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police issued 56 tickets overnight during a checkpoint in southeast Charlotte.

The checkpoint was among several scheduled police activities during Operation Firecracker, a crackdown this weekend on speeders, DWI violators, and aggressive drivers.

Operation Firecracker is being conducted in both Carolinas and involves local, county and state highway patrol officers.

The overnight checkpoint in Charlotte was from 11 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Providence Road.

Sgt. David Sloan, of CMPD's traffic safety unit, said officers charged seven drivers with DWI, and eight others with violating the open-container law while driving.

In addition, five people were charged with possession or consumption of alcohol under the age of 21.

Other charges:

Driving While License Revoked- 4

No Operator’s license- 7

Other Citations- 25

Additional checkpoints are planned this weekend.
