Man drowns in Lake Wylie

A 19-year-old man drowned Friday night while swimming in Lake Wylie, authorities say.

The man was trying to swim across a cove at McDowell Park, off N.C. 49 not far from the state line. Witnesses told authorities the man was swimming with friends and suddenly began struggling, according to NewsChannel 36, the Observer's news partner.

Witnesses said the man went under the water and didn't resurface.

The Charlotte Fire Department's dive squad found the man about 9 p.m., an hour after he went under the water. Works performed CPR on the victim and he was rushed to CMC-Pineville, but he died.

The name of the victim has not been released.
