Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police patrolled on foot, motorcycle and Segway as they worked to keep traffic moving and patrons safe uptown on Saturday night.
As of 11:30 p.m., police arrested at least 15 people, said Robert Tufano, CMPD public affairs coordinator. Police did not have details on the arrests.
Officers patrolled along nearly every block of Tryon Street. They wore plastic restraints attached to their belts and some had police batons as well. Traffic signals made it difficult to turn on and off the busy street. Motorists along Tryon and College Street, between Fourth and Sixth streets, crawled. Revelers filled the sidewalks along those streets.
Police didn't simply show a strong presence known uptown. On Friday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police issued 56 tickets during a checkpoint in southeast Charlotte.
The checkpoint was among several scheduled police activities during Operation Firecracker, a crackdown this weekend on speeders, DWI violators, and aggressive drivers. Operation Firecracker is being conducted in both Carolinas and involves local, county and state highway patrol officers.
