A 70-year-old man was beaten to death late Wednesday night in a Hickory assisted living care center, and police have arrested a fellow resident and charged him with murder.
Hickory police said this morning that Dennis Edward Scherzer, 43, was arrested in connection with the death.
The victim was identified as Roland Simmons.
Scherzer and Simmons were residents at the Walden House Assisted Living Center, on 3rd Avenue S.E. Police have not released details on what might have led to the beating, but they said Simmons' body was found near a bench outside the home.
Scherzer is in the Catawba County Jail, being held without bond. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Friday in Newton.
