Students to fight for healthcare reform

North Mecklenburg High students will take their call for healthcare reform to Washington.

Several members of Student Advocates for Hopeful Politics have been invited to meet with Sen. Kay Hagan on August 5 as part of her Carolina Coffee meetings. Last month, the group met with Rep Mel Watt, D-N.C., to discuss their proposal to provide universal healthcare.

During the school year, the students and other classmates wrote, revised and debated on Facebook, to create a 23-page health care reform bill. It took them two months to do it. The bill calls for a new federal health care program that would insure people unable to get private insurance. It also seeks tax credits, tort reform and more money for preventive programs. They submitted the bill to members of the N.C. congressional delegation in April, and now they're networking to get it introduced in Congress.

Along with meeting Hagan, the students plan to meet with the Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) during their trip. They've also arranged meetings with staff for Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.).
