Thousands more Charlotte-area students return to the classroom today.
It's the first day of the 2009-10 academic year for students at a number of private schools in Mecklenburg County, and for thousands more in York County.
Opening today are the Clover, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and York systems, although sixth-grade and ninth-grade students in Rock Hill began classes Tuesday. The Chester and Lancaster county systems opened Monday. Starting classes Thursday will be the Chesterfield County Schools.
In Mecklenburg County, today is opening day for the Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools, and for Providence Day, Northside Christian, Charlotte Preparatory and Trinity Episcopal schools.
United Faith Christian Academy opens Thursday.
Most public school systems in North Carolina, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg, begin classes Tuesday.
