Strayer University, a nationwide school with 71 campuses in 15 states and the District of Columbia, will hold its first Charlotte-based commencement exercises Saturday morning at Bojangles Coliseum.
Students from Carolinas campus sites of Strayer have been invited to the ceremonies, scheduled for 10 a.m. Commencement speaker will be Joyce Roche, president and CEO of Girls Incorporated, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring success in girls.
Most of Strayer's students are working adults who have returned to school in an effort to get a better job or win a promotion with their current company.
The Charlotte ceremony honors students who attended the 10 campuses in seven Carolinas cities – Charlotte, Huntersville, Raleigh and Greensboro in North Carolinas; and Charleston, Columbia and Greenville in South Carolina. In all, 680 students are scheduled to receive degrees.
Valedictorian at the Charlotte ceremony is Todd Pasfield, an employee at Simmons Mattress Company. He will receive a bachelors degree in accounting at Saturday's exercises.
“Going back to school is always something I wanted to do, but I needed to figure out how to balance it with all the other responsibilities in my life,” said Pasfield, 29, who graduates with a 4.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
