State Sen. R.C. Soles apparently shot a would-be intruder at his home outside Tabor City around 5 p.m. Sunday, a local official said.
Kyle Blackburn was transported to an S.C. hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Rex Gore, district attorney for Columbus, Bladen and Brunswick counties.
Blackburn was accompanied by another man, B.J. Wright, a former client of Soles, who is a lawyer. Wright was released from prison this month after serving time for probation violation, Gore said.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office. The SBI already has been looking into allegations by another former Soles client that Soles fondled the man 12 years ago. The man, 27-year-old Stacey Scott, recanted the allegation last week, days after it was broadcast on a TV news report.
The SBI also is looking into an apparent arson case involving the home of another of Soles' clients. Soles, 74, is a ranking Democrat and the longest-serving current member of the legislature.
