Sunday hours resume tomorrow at seven libraries: Main Library, ImaginOn, Independence, Morrison, South County, University City and North County. They will open from 1- 6 p.m.
The branches suspended Sunday operations from July 5 to Sept. 6 as part a $3.5 million budget cut.
Mecklenburg County, which funds 90 percent of the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, ordered the system to cut its budget by 10 percent due to the recession. In addition to the Sunday closures, the libraries enacted other measures including staff furloughs and buying fewer books and CDs.
In recommending the changes earlier this summer, library board members said Mondays were the busiest days for libraries followed by Saturdays and Sundays. Thursday is the slowest day.
At the time, Director of Libraries Charles Brown said in a new release that reduced hours during the summer would have the least impact on customers, especially students: “We're talking about closing for about 10 Sundays this summer, while school is out of session.”
