A road project that is causing traffic problems in the University City area is the result of a N.C. Department of Transportation project -- not a City of Charlotte project, as the Observer reported online Monday.
The state DOT has closed McLean Road at Old Concord Road for intersection improvements. Those improvements include a dedicated left-turn lane4, construction of a 4-foot-wide concrete median, and a widened concrete railroad track crossing surface. Other minor changes also are being made.
The work has caused major traffic problems on Rocky River, John Russell and Back Creek Church roads. McLean Road is a heavily used cut-through for motorists in the area.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Monday sent an email to residents of the University City area, explaining that police are directing traffic in the area to alleviate the backups -- and asking the public not to call 911 to report traffic congestion.
The work is scheduled for completion near the end of the month.
