Although U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick of Charlotte doesn't sit on the House Financial Services Committee, she said Friday she has been talking with colleagues about how to make sure that Bank of America doesn't leave the Queen City no matter who is named as its next chief executive officer.
Myrick, a former mayor, said it's up to the bank's board of directors to name the new CEO.
“Once the decision's made, it's up to the community to come together to convince them they need to keep the presence in Charlotte,” Myrick, a Republican, said in an interview.
“It's of great concern to everybody,” she said. “Nobody has said they are moving. But there are rumors all over the place.”
Myrick said she has a good relationship with Democratic U.S. Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, who leads the House Financial Services Committee, and has spoken with him about the issue.
“I talk to Barney all the time,” Myrick said. “Barney has basically said he believes there's a place for both Charlotte and Boston.”
A leading candidate for the CEO position, Bank of America consumer banking chief Brian Moynihan, is a former FleetBoston Financial executive who still has offices in Boston.
But, as her Democratic colleague Mel Watt pointed out this week, Myrick said the decision isn't up to Congress.
“This isn't a congressional decision, as everybody knows,” she said.
