MONTREAL Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta scored in the shootout, and the Montreal Canadiens stopped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win Tuesday against Atlanta.
The Canadiens (3-5) avoided their worst start in nearly 70 years. Montreal was 1-10-1 during the 1940-41 season.
Gionta, who also score late in the first period, sealed the win with a backhander past Ondrej Pavelec on Montreal's third attempt of the shootout.
Colby Armstrong got the Thrashers to overtime with a goal at 6minutes, 6seconds of the third. Jaroslav Halak, however, stopped Ilya Kovalchuk and Rich Peverley on their first two shootout attempts.
PENGUINS 5, BLUES 1: Tyler Kennedy and Evgeni Malkin scored 69 seconds apart during the first period and Ruslan Fedotenko and Matt Cooke 36 seconds apart during the second, helping host Pittsburgh thump St. Louis and improve to an NHL-best 8-1.

CHICAGO: Defenseman Chris Chelios, 47, who spent 25 years in the NHL with Montreal, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit, signed with the American Hockey League's Wolves. He will make his debut Friday at home against Manitoba. Terms were not disclosed.
NASHVILLE: The Predators put captain Jason Arnott on injured reserve. Arnott hurt his left shoulder and arm during the third period of Saturday's shootout loss at Washington and could be out up to two weeks.
