Checkers resume 'Fight for Ellie' on Sunday

The Charlotte Checkers will host "Fight for Ellie" at Sunday's home game, to raise funds for Ellie Potvin, a 7-year old battling Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

The Checkers will host the Kalamazoo Wings at 2p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Last season, the hockey team hosted a similar night and raised nearly $10,000 for Ellie's treatment and family expenses. Ellie's cancer went into remission after 10 months but has returned.

"Last season we had the pleasure of welcoming Ellie and the Potvin clan into the Checkers family and committed to them that we were in this for the long term," said Tera Black, the Checkers chief operating officer. "Now, as the Potvins face the next stage of their journey, we have resumed our commitment and will be doing everything that we can to raise funds and spirits."

Last year, Ellie and her family were met on the ice by the players, a video tribute was played and she was named the first star of the game.

Fund-raiser tickets can be purchased for $15, with $6 going directly to the family. For information go to www.gocheckers.com/ellie, or contact Danielle Adkins at 704-444-1876 or dadkins@gocheckers.com.
