CMS to kids: Leave masks, candy home

Halloween might be the holiday for high jinks, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools wants to make sure no masked pranksters conjure anything up at this weekend's high school football games.

CMS is prohibiting students from wearing costumes or masks to Friday's games. Spokeswoman Kathleen Johansen said the ban comes out of concern for safety and because "it might scare some of the younger kids" who come to the games.

Children can, however, wear costumes to school today, the last school day of the week. Some schools are encouraging students to dress up as their favorite book characters as part of events to highlight the importance of reading.

CMS is also discouraging students from hauling their post-Halloween candy stashes to school on Monday. Johansen said individual schools can take different approaches, but CMS is suggesting students leave the sweets at home.

"It can be a distraction, just the wrappers and opening it up, things like that," she said. "Sometimes it can cause trouble in class.

"We're not banning candy from school. We'd just rather they didn't bring it."
