Eliminate
The school board voted to eliminate the following magnet programs:
Accelerated learning: Removed program at First Ward Elementary beginning in 2010-11 school year.
Center for Leadership and Global Economics: Removed program at Beverly Woods Elementary, Eastway and Kennedy Middle, and Garinger and Olympic high schools beginning in 2009-10 school year.
Communication Arts: Removed program from Hornets Nest Elementary and John Taylor Williams Middle, beginning 2009-10 school year.
Early College: Program at E.E. Waddell High to be phased out over two years, ending in the 2010-11 school year.
Math, Science and Environmental Studies: Removed program from Cochrane Middle and added the middle-school component to Morehead Elementary, converting that school to a K-8 program effective in 2010-11 school year.
Open Education: Removed the Open/Paideia program from Irwin Elementary, Piedmont and Randolph middle schools, and West Charlotte High, effective in 2009-10 school year.
Paideia: Removed Paideia program from Sterling Elementary, effective for the 2009-10 school year.
Modify
The school board voted to modify the following programs:
International Baccalaureate (IB): The board supported strengthening the middle and high school IB programs. Changes include requiring middle and high school students to be promoted to the next grade to continue in the magnet program. Students in the Middle Years Program (grades six through 10) must take all courses for which they have the prerequisites. High school IB diploma candidates must successfully complete the Theory of Knowledge course and six other IB courses and exams. The certificate program, which required three courses with three exams, will be eliminated. The changes take effect in 2009-10 school year.
Leadership and Global Economics: Converted the program at Winding Springs Elementary into a countywide K-5 program. Students would continue the program at Marie G. Davis Military and Global Leadership Academy if they met the magnet-program requirements for Marie G. Davis. This change effective for the 2009-10 school year.
Math, Science and Environmental Studies: Expanded program at Morehead Elementary and convert that school to K-8. Entrance requirements for the program will also be strengthened. Students must score a Level III or IV on math and science End-of-Grade tests taken in the spring prior to admission. Rising ninth-graders must also complete Algebra I in eighth grade or achieve a Level IV score on the eighth-grade math End-of-Grade test. Takes effect in the 2009-10 school year.
Montessori: Changed transportation eligibility for Chantilly to serve students in the green magnet-transportation zone. Park Road Montessori will serve the blue magnet-transportation zone. The changes take place in the 2009-10 school year.
Also, the board voted to add a sixth-grade Montessori program to Chantilly, Highland Mill and Park Road schools, and to create a Montessori middle-school program for grades seven and eight at Sedgefield Middle. Students whose home school is Sedgefield Middle will remain there. The sixth-grade classes will be added in the 2009-10 school year; seventh grade will begin in the 2010-11 school year, and eighth-grade classes will begin in the 2011-12 school year.
Paideia: Converted the program at Oakhurst to a countywide program, starting in the 2009-10 school year.
Spanish: Moved the middle-school Spanish program from Smith Academy to Collinswood and Oaklawn. Collinswood and Oaklawn will become K-8 schools. Rising sixth-grade students at Collinswood and Oaklawn will stay on site beginning in the 2010-11 school year and the program will grow by one grade each year until the school is K-8.
French: Moved program from Oaklawn to Smith Academy, effective in 2009-10 school year.
World Languages: Eliminated program from E.E. Waddell High. The program would remain at West Mecklenburg and would be added to South Mecklenburg High, starting in 2009-10 school year.
No changes
The Board did not make any changes to the following programs:
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program: No changes to program at Cotswold, Huntingtowne Farms, Irwin, Lansdowne and Statesville Road elementary schools.
Learning Immersion/Talent Development: No changes to program at Barringer, Idlewild, Shamrock Gardens, Villa Heights, Lincoln Heights and Tuckaseegee elementary schools.
Military and Global Leadership: No changes to the program at Marie G. Davis.
Technology: No changes to program at Phillip O. Berry Academy.
Traditional: No changes to program at Elizabeth and Myers Park Traditional schools.
Visual and Performing Arts: No changes to program at Dilworth, University Park and Northwest School of the Arts.
World Languages: No changes to program at Smith Academy for students studying Chinese, French, German and Japanese. The World Languages program would remain at West Mecklenburg High School.
