Central Piedmont Community College is taking a host of budget actions -- including cutting summer operation hours and course offerings -- to absorb cuts that it faces after returning more than $2.6 million to Mecklenburg County and the state, the school announced today.
The state's largest community college announced today it will close Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this summer and reduce the volume of printed schedules to the community to save money. The compressed work week and reduced funding will also force the school to shrink the number of classes CPCC can offer this summer.
The Charlotte-based school is also cutting back on maintenance and security measures, along with freezing travel, job openings and merit pay to save money.
"Our enrollment has grown 19 percent in the past 18 months. That growth, coupled with the current economic situation, is forcing us to cut back wherever we can," CPCC President Tony Zeiss said today.
The school, Zeiss said, had to return $647,000 to Mecklenburg and more than $2 million to the state during the current fiscal year. "Compressing our summer work week, changing the way we print and distribute our schedules and freezing other ancillary expenses will help the college meet those cuts," he said.
All CPCC facilities will be closed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from May 15 through August 2, operating on a 40-hour, four-day work week, except for:
Harper Campus, which will be open for scheduled classes only.
The Hendrick Center on Levine Campus, which will open for scheduled classes only.
The Overcash Building on Central Campus, opened for scheduled classes and performances only.
The Harris Conference Center, which will open for scheduled events only.
Other services will not be available at these locations on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
During the reduced scheduled, office hours will run Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Classes will continue to be scheduled through the evening hours.
