Lauryn Hill will headline Columbia’s Famously Hot New Year on Dec. 31, city officials announced Thursday.
Hip-hop singer Hill is a five-time Grammy winner known for her hits “Do Wop (That Thing),” “Ex-Factor,” “Everything is Everything” and “To Zion.”
Three South Carolina bands will open for Hill – Charleston’s vintage rock group Dead 27s, Columbia’s folk-hop band Colorblind and Charleston alt-country band Susto.
Now its fifth year, Famously Hot New Year is South Carolina’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration. Last year’s event drew a crowd of 28,000.
Past years’ performers have included Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton, The Wallflowers, Kool & the Gang, ZZ Ward and The O’Jays.
Famously Hot New Year is a free event that will be held this year from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Dec. 31 at Main and Gervais streets in downtown Columbia. There will be a fireworks show at midnight.
