Dance troupes from North Carolina and New York will converge at the Booth Playhouse this weekend in the annual Dance Charlotte! showcase.
It will include “Greek Dreams With Flute” by modern-dance pioneer Erick Hawkins. Dance Charlotte! performers have been led in Hawkins' work by Katherine Duke, a Charlotte native. She's the artistic director of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, the New York troupe founded by the late dancer/choreographer.
The program includes performances by Caroline Calouche & Co., the Gastonia group whose founder launched Dance Charlotte!; EEMotion, led by UNC Charlotte faculty member E.E. Balcos; Greensboro-based Freedom Dances; Alice Howes, who also teaches at UNCC; and the Von Howard Project, a three-dancer New York troupe that includes Daniel Gwirtzman, whose choreography was included in the 2006 installment of N.C. Dance Theatre's annual Innovative Works. show. For times and details, see Page 12.
