Pianist Charles Wadsworth, a longtime audience favorite at Charleston's Spoleto Festival USA, will come to Charlotte for a Feb. 12 fundraiser benefiting two concert series - including a new one at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
The performance by Charles Wadsworth & Friends will pave the way for the Music and Museum series at the Bechtler, where the fundraiser will take place. Wadsworth will bring along five other musicians, including two Spoleto regulars: violinist Chee-Yun, who also played in Charlotte's erstwhile Brightstar Music Festival, and soprano Courtenay Budd. They'll perform works by Amy Beach, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Paul Schoenfield and Wadsworth.
Music and Museum will pair works from the museum's collection with music that has affinities to them, explained Christopher Lawing, the museum's education director. It will open Feb. 14 with a free concert pairing music by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Samuel Barber with art by Alexander Calder and Gunter Haese. The performers will be cellist Tanja Bechtler, a former Charlotte Symphony member, and pianist Paul Nitsch of Queens University of Charlotte.
Wadsworth's concert also will benefit Friends of Music at Queens, a longtime series at the Myers Park campus.
