For 10 seasons, Donna Hill has been director of the Carolina Voices’ classical chamber ensemble, The Festival Singers. On Nov. 10-11, she will kick off a new season with “American Reflections: A Salute to Veteran’s Day” to honor past and present members of the military service and their friends and family. The event has special meaning for Hill since her now-retired father was in the Army Reserve. Joanne Spataro
Pomp and circumstance: Hill studied choral conducting with Dr. Robert Edgerton and the late Dr. Mary Nell Saunders, who was an Oratorio director. She works hard throughout the rehearsal and performance process with The Festival Singers. “We wanted to offer a musical gift to the community that was focused around honoring and remembering our veterans,” she said. “This (show) will be full of patriotic music that is very near and dear to our hearts.”
Like father, like daughter: The director’s dad also enjoys singing and celebrating on Veteran’s Day. “He loves to remember and honor veterans and he’s so proud of his years of service,” said Hill. “He’ll get to experience the concert with everyone else who’s there.”
Day job: Hill balances a job at a local bank with her Carolina Voices duties, plus she is the choir director for Central United Methodist Church in Concord. “I’m very fortunate that I can be successful in the business world and do what my real passion is outside of my business life," she said. "(I’m) very fortunate to be able to have my feet in both sides of my life.”
