What to Watch on Wednesday: Saying goodbye to ‘Psych’

“Psych,” series about a super-observant goofball who pretends to be a psychic so that he and his best friend can work as consultants for the police, ends tonight after an eight-year run on USA.

Psych (9pm, USA) - It’s probably time – but it’s still sad – that we say goodbye to our best Santa Barbara pals tonight, when “Psych” ends after an eight-year run on USA Network. The show, about a super-observant goofball named Shawn ( James Roday) who pretends to be a psychic so that he and his best friend Gus ( Dule Hill – the best part of the series) can work as consultants for the police department, is admittedly an acquired taste. It liberally sprinkles pop culture references – and beloved guest stars from some of the biggest teen movies of the 1980s – into the ridiculously plotted scripts capped with some of the silliest dialogue you’ll find on television. But the chemistry between Shawn and Gus and the story of their sweet, devoted friendship won us over and kept millions of Psych-Os coming back week after week. That and the search for the pineapple. (Note: “ Psych After Pshow” airs immediately following the finale.)

Also on tonight . . .

Harry’s South Pole Heroes (8pm, NBC) - A UK documentary about the Walking with the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge 2013, in which four wounded British soldiers, led by Prince Harry, take on two other teams in a race to the South Pole.

Suburgatory (8:30pm, ABC) - Lisa decides to propose to Malik, but the news sends Tessa to her dad for advice when she isn’t sure how to respond – especially when the proposal doesn’t go as planned.

The 100 (9pm, CW) - A search-and-rescue mission ends in surprise, while Raven helps Abby craft an escape pod.

The Secrets of the Dead (10pm, UNC-TV) - A look at the forensic techniques used to study the lost diary of Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873), the famed explorer. The work reveals that he witnessed a massacre of slaves by slave traders, and that the legend that surrounds him isn’t true to the man.
