Guide to Saturday events in the Charlotte area

Carowinds hosts its annual JoyFest event with gospel stars, singers, rappers and speakers; Theatre Charlotte presents “Hair”; Discovery Place shows “Hubble” in Imax; and exhibitors show beads, jewelry and crafting supplies at American Bead & Jewelry Expo.

“The View’s” Sherri Shepherd and fellow comedian/returning emcee Bone Hampton join gospel stars, singers, rappers and speakers at this annual spring event. On the bill: Kirk Franklin, Tamela Mann, Lecrae, Humble Tip, Dr. Larry D. Reid & The Breakthrough Singers and many more.

Theater

‘Hair’

The hit-filled musical (“Let the Sunshine In,” “Hair”) summons the era of hippies, protests and free love. Recommended for ages 16 and older.

Movie

‘Hubble’

10:30 a.m., 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. (also Friday and various times through May 30). Discovery Place’s The Charlotte Observer Omnimax Theatre, 301 N. Tryon St. $9-$10. 704-372-6261.

An IMAX documentary examines the Hubble Space Telescope’s legacy and highlights its impact on the way people view the universe. The 44-minute, G-rated film is narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. Final weekend.

Expo

American Bead & Jewelry Show

10 a.m.-5 p.m. (10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday). Metrolina Tradeshow Expo, 7100 Statesville Road. $5 (good for both days). www.americangemexpo.com.

Exhibitors will offer beads, beading supplies, lampwork, ready-to-wear jewelry and jewelry-making supplies.
