Check out The Observer’s Piedmont Playlist, where we’ll feature videos of local bands and groups playing in the area. Here’s Bubonik Funk’s “Oddfish, Volume 1” and Gedeon Luke’s “Live Free & Love”.

Bubonik Funk

Fresh from New Orleans Jazz Fest, Charlotte rock staple Bubonik Funk celebrates the release of its new album, “Oddfish, Volume 1,” at Chop Shop (399 E. 35th St.) in NoDa June 6.

“Oddfish” mixes Southern-fried blues-rock, smooth and sunny 311-style funk, and the quirkiness and attitude of early Red Hot Chili Peppers – a formula its tweaked on its fifth release.

Gedeon Luke & The People

Memphis-raised, New York-based band leader Gedeon Luke released his full-length debut album “Live Free & Love” with his eight-piece band the People on June 3. The album and Luke himself is a throwback to gritty soul and funk greats Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone. There’s a spiritual undercurrent that recalls the best uplifting and unifying anthems that runs throughout the record.
