‘Earth to Echo’

Tue 7.1 After receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, a group of kids embarks on an adventure with an alien who needs their help.

WIN TICKETS: “Earth to Echo” (rated PG) opens Wednesday, July 2, but an advance screening of the film is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, in south Charlotte. To enter to win a pair of passes via random drawing, email with “Earth to Echo” in the subject line and your name, age and phone number in the body of the email. Deadline is 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra concludes its Summer Pops season with music from Woody Guthrie to Irving Berlin. Fireworks follow the show.

The versatile Gastonia native – who has acted in films from 1985’s “The Color Purple” to 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” – will sing twice with the Ziad Jazz Quartet.
