‘Get On Up’
Tue 7.29 A chronicle of James Brown’s rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history. Chadwick Boseman (Jackie Robinson in “42”) portrays the legendary singer.
GET TICKETS: “Get On Up” (rated PG-13) opens Aug. 1, but an advance screening of the film is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday in south Charlotte. Free passes will be distributed in the main lobby of The Charlotte Observer building, 600 S. Tryon St., 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, July 25. Limit one pass per person (good for two people), while supplies last.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
Wed 7.30 In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan (Lee Pace).

Alive After Five will not only be the city’s springboard into the weekend, it will also mark the starting point of uptown’s three-day futbol fandemonium extravaganza. Abbey Road Live, a Beatles tribute band, will take the Commons Area Stage at 5 p.m. Later in the evening, Michael Jackson tribute band Who’s Bad will perform at Rooftop 210.
From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1, Liverpool FC players will host an autograph and photo session at Whisky River at the EpiCentre. At 7 p.m., there’ll be a celebration kickoff at Rooftop 210 with Jon Wilson of WCCB as host.
And before the big match between Liverpool FC and AC Milan at Bank of America Stadium Aug. 2, the EpiCentre will host the Guinness Champions Cup Bar Crawl, starting at noon at Rooftop 210. Tickets ($10) can be purchased at www.championscupbarcrawl.eventbrite.com.
