Places Helen Schwab has written about in the past month or so include these:
A checkup on more places with significant chef changes found Upstream (6902 Phillips Place Court; 704-556-7730) has fared well, with longtime chef de cuisine Scott Wallen taking over from departing Tom Condron, while a dinner at Aquavina (435 S. Tryon St.; 704-377-9911) fell quite short of past success under Jason Pound (now at Soul).
Folks seeking sushi uptown get plenty of choices, with Press (333 W. Trade St.; 704-370-3006) a surprisingly good choice, and Enso (210 E. Trade St.; 704-716-3676), Fiji (116 W. Fifth St.; 704-376-1212) and Room 112 (112 S. Tryon St.; 704-335-7112) also rolling the raw.
Big View Diner (16637 Lancaster Highway; 704-544-0313) puts a modern spin on diner food, in a stylishly retro setting.
Deejai (613 Providence Road; 704-333-7884) offers an attractive Thai option, though seasoning tends to be restrained.
Sonoma (Founders Hall, 100 N. Tryon St.; 704-332-1132) and Bonterra (1829 Cleveland Ave., 704-372-9463), both with chef changes in the last few months, have gone in different directions: Sonoma mines more of the mainstream, with straightforward ingredients and lower prices, while Bonterra adds steaks to its pricy entree lineup, plus more noshes.
